Project Description :
"Echoes" pays homage to Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s Surrounded Islands, their 1983 installation that transformed Biscayne Bay’s islands into vibrant, temporary landmarks wrapped in pink fabric. Like Surrounded Islands, "Echoes" draws attention to the beauty and vulnerability of Biscayne Bay, inviting viewers to see this natural environment in a new light. The 3D printed masses, piercing through a sturdy MDF sheet, symbolize the islands, resilient yet at risk, while the pulsing lights and pink painted lines evoke the same rhythmic flow of nature that inspired Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s work. By using red transparent filament and an interactive light display that syncs with festival music, "Echoes" merges art with the rhythm of its environment, much as Surrounded Islands brought the islands into dialogue with Miami’s landscape and community.
Through this installation, I aim to echo their legacy—creating a striking visual reminder of nature’s presence, resilience, and fragility—while inspiring viewers to consider the urgent need to protect Biscayne Bay and other natural spaces from climate change. Like Christo and Jeanne-Claude, I hope to draw people closer to their environment, fostering a deeper awareness and connection to the places that shape our lives.
